The bongs in this price range are considered nice, well-made, and durable. The glass quality is also good, with strong hits!
We don’t often think of bong-shaped objects as being inexpensive, but the truth is that you can get a glass bong for less than twenty dollars. The trick to finding these bargains is researching and knowing what it takes to make one work well. This article will give insight into how a glass bong works so that when you go shopping, you’ll be able to avoid wasting money on substandard products.
Spending hundreds or thousands of dollars on something is not very fun if you want an enjoyable experience with no hassle. We’ve already covered many great ways to save money while still getting quality items without sacrificing performance. Now we’re going to take things up a notch by looking at a unique type of waterpipe called the “glass bong.”
This relatively new invention has quickly become popular among pot smokers because its design allows them to enjoy their favorite strains more subtly than traditional methods allow. Whether you plan to smoke marijuana or another substance through it, this article will help you understand how they work so that when you go shopping, you’ll be able to avoid wasting money on the wrong products.
What Is A Glass Pipe?
Glass pipes are similar to those used for tobacco cigarettes. Still, instead of burning solid material like paper or tobacco inside, there’s loose material like ground herbs which vaporize due to heat from the flame within.
These pipes come in several different shapes and sizes, including ones shaped like small bottles, tubes, bowls, etc.… Many people use these pipes primarily as weed delivery systems rather than strictly as smoking tools themselves.
There are two types of glass bongs – single and dual chambers. Single chamber models have only one place where the user puts any material. In contrast, dual chamber models feature compartments separated by a divider allowing users to set their choice of materials in each separately.
While both styles can produce good results, I refer to the simpler style because it makes cleaning easier and gives me better control over my hits.
Why Would You Want One?
As mentioned earlier, the most common reason someone would buy a glass pipe is to consume cannabis efficiently. However, they can also be helpful for other substances such as tobacco, hashish, kief, crack cocaine, tobacco blends, liquid extracts, pills, and even ammonia.
Because it produces smaller amounts of smoke per bowl than combustion, using a glass bong may reduce the number of toxins inhaled during consumption. In addition, since the pipe does not burn anything, it doesn’t contribute to environmental problems associated with cigarette production. Lastly, many believe that glass bongs provide a cleaner high than other forms of smoking.
If you aren’t interested in consuming cannabis, you might consider buying a glass bong just for fun! They look fantastic and offer the same effects as real smoking, although they won’t pack a punch. Furthermore, they’re also perfect for parties. If you’d like to try out a glass bong yourself, here are three simple designs you could follow along with below.

Design #1: Bottle
This is probably the simplest method of creating a working glass bong. You only need a big bottle (preferably clear plastic) and some tubing. Cut off part of one end of the tube so that it fits tightly around the neck of the bottle.
Then cut another piece of tubing long enough to fit between the open ends of the first section. Finally, insert a wick into the bottommost hole and tie it closed, so it hangs down into the middle gap. Once done, fill the top half of the bottle with warm tap water until about 1″ remains above the level of the wick’s head.
Insert the mouthpiece halfway down into the water and hold it firmly. Light a match and wait 2 seconds before blowing it out completely. Hold the lit match against the bottle’s opening for 3-4 seconds and slowly lower it into the water.
After a few moments, the wick will begin to smoke and rise toward the water’s surface. Wait for 10-15 minutes and repeat once more. It’s important to remember that after every hit, the temperature of the water must be increased slightly; otherwise, the bong won’t function correctly.
Also, keep the water from direct sunlight, which tends to cause rapid heating. Be careful, though; too much exposure can destroy your lungs!
You might find that simply pouring hot water directly onto a wick isn’t always practical. Instead, you could try adding baking soda to the mix. Then, just a little bit of water containing vinegar or lemon juice and sit for 30 minutes.
Place a wick into the mixture and light it. As soon as the wick glows, pour the solution into the mouthpiece and suck in the air. There should be no visible flames coming from the sides of the bong. Repeat this process twice, letting the oven time increase the water temperature before lighting each subsequent session.
For the best effect, do this four times a day. Each time the water gets hotter, start the experiment with fresh ingredients.
Design #2: Simple Tube
Another easy way to build a basic glass bong is to purchase a large flexible hose and cut off a short portion near one end (about 12 inches). Next, drill a small hole opposite the side where the cut was made. Use this hole to attach a ball tip and screw on a wide straw.
Fill the rest of the space with sand so that it reaches almost to the lip of the tube. Set aside and clean this area thoroughly. Take a lighter and set fire to the sand. Allow the flame to stay stable for 5 minutes, then blow it out.
At this point, the sand should be glowing red. Carefully remove the sand from the tube with tongs or gloves, leaving behind a charred black residue. Next, clean the entire inner surface of the tube with soap and water. Dry it off, and insert a medium-sized hookah brush into the tube.
Run the water line under cold water for 15 minutes, turn on the showerhead and run the full stream blast for 20 seconds. Remove from the bath and dry the exterior surfaces of the bong gently with a towel. When dry, wrap it securely with tape.
Using scissors, trim the remaining hose down to approximately 6 inches. Leave about ¼ inch extra at either end for attaching pieces later.
Now that everything is ready, you can finally assemble the actual bong. First, attach the charred sections of burnt sand to the narrowest ends of the tube. Then connect a standard male fitting to the far wider end of the tube.
On the broadest end, solder together two female fittings so that they face outward. First, slide the tube into the larger end of the first female attachment. Next, fit the second female adapter over the tube and secure it. Finally, slide the shorter piece of hose into the narrower end of the second female connection.
Push it further down into the body of the connection until it meets the longer piece. Secure the assembly with tape. Connect a hose clamp to the free end of the shortest amount of hose and tighten it to prevent leaks. Finally, test the assembled product by connecting the smallest end of the tube to a faucet. Water should flow steadily without leaking anywhere.
You’ll now need to create a filter system to use the device. Start by cutting a square of foam rubber roughly ½ inch thick and 13 inches across. Next, glue four strips of screen mesh parallel to each other and perpendicular to the edges of the foam.
Cut nine lengths of thin metal wire measuring 8mm x 11cm. Bend each end of each strip to form hooks. Thread each hooked wire through a corresponding hole in the mesh and push them down into the foam. Continue gluing additional mesh strips and wires until you reach the desired size of the filter.
Finally, you’ll need to cover the exposed parts of the bong with silicone caulk. Then, simply a generous bead of siliconized caulking compound to each area. Let cure for 24 hours. Your finished product should resemble an upside-down soup can with holes drilled throughout.
Test it by filling the bong with water and inserting the mouthpiece. Blow lightly through the stem for 2-3 seconds before removing. Drinkable water will pass through the filter, but nothing else will.
For optimal results, washing the bong regularly with dishwashing detergent is recommended. Washing helps eliminate the buildup of oils and grime and keeps the interior clean and bacteria-free.
Total Cost: Under $50 + Tax
These projects cost between $25-$45, depending on how much you decide to pay for supplies. And unlike more expensive bongs, the total price includes shipping costs, so you won’t waste money paying inflated prices for international orders. Keep reading to see what kind of savings you can expect.
